UPPER FRYINGPAN (Mile Marker 8 to Ruedi Reservoir)

FLOW: 45 CFS

WATER CLARITY: Clean, clear and ever-cold

OVERALL RATING: 7 out of 10

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT: Mysis shrimp, Blue Winged Olives, Midges, Sculpins

THE LOW-DOWN :  The City of Aspen is performing their annual dam maintenance, the bowl area is under a voluntary closure while the flow is being diverted from the back side. With decreased oxygen in the toilet bowl area, anglers are asked to leave those fish be for a week or so.

Baetis (BWOs) are still hatching for an hour or two midday, and the midge hatch tends to be best around noon and again at twilight. BWOs tend to be gray-bodied in sizes 20-22, most midges are dark in color. You might see a green drake or pale morning dun (PMD) or two, but they are about done.

Flows are cranked down to 45, and will probably stay there all winter at this point. Spawning beds are becoming more visible, so please help educate anglers (in a friendly way) that don't realize it is poor form to cast to these vulnerable fish. Crossing upstream of the redds isn't helpful either, the eggs will get covered with mud and won't develop properly.

Mysis shrimp are a year-round food factor, and don't forget your box full of streamers for low-light periods or any time it's breezy or rainy.

MIDDLE FRYINGPAN (Mile Markers 4 to 8)

WATER CONDITIONS: Clear flows

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT: Blue Winged Olives, Midges, Sculpins

OVERALL RATING: 7 out of 10

THE LOW DOWN: For those who get bummed out seeing other anglers, here's a hint: the middle river has the same hatches without the crowds! Another benefit of fishing the middle river is the plethora of public access. What is private is clearly marked, and the rest is there for you to explore.

HINTS: Fish a whole mile of river, you'll fish many different water types and get shots at a lot of fish!

LOWER FRYINGPAN (Basalt to Mile Marker 4)

WATER CONDITIONS: Clear flows, we will see ice developing in the shady zones soon

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT: Blue Winged Olives, Midges, Sculpins

OVERALL RATING: 6 out of 10

THE LOWDOWN:  If Euro or Czech nymphing is your thing, the lower Fryingpan is ideal. The fish in the lower Fryingpan are not as paranoid as their cousins up under the dam- this makes for terrific beginner water where the fish will still eat bigger flies with not-so-perfect drifts.  Dry dropper rigs can be deadly in this section of river.

If the crowds of people upstream are thick, come explore some lower Fryingpan access spots!
