ROARING FORK RIVER REPORT

June 13, 2018

UPPER ROARING FORK- ASPEN DOWNSTREAM TO BASALT     
                  
FLOW: 700 cfs below Maroon Creek (Woody Creek Canyon) 

WATER CLARITY: The Upper Fork is easing out of runoff mode, but certainly fishable most days now!

OVERALL RATING: 6 out of 10

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT:  BWO adults, BWO, PMD and green drake nymphs, golden stonefly nymphs, caddis adults, emergers and larva, cranefly larva, midges, sculpins

THE LOW DOWN:  Crowds are very light this time of year and Aspen is quieting down.  We are seeing spring runoff conditions, keep in mind the river is dirtiest in the mornings and cleanest in the afternoons.

Considering the fluctuating conditions of runoff, we've still seen BWOs and caddis taking flight lately. We tend to fish this section of the Fork like the upper Fryingpan (and not just in the spring), so remember your slim and quiet bugs versus the fat and flashy ones.  The opposite can be true if you find some deep and oxygenated areas where golden stoneflies thrive.  

Miles of water can be found in Jaffe Park, and spend some time this spring with your map in your lap figuring out all of those other public access points!

HINTS: This is the least crowded time of year and the upper Fork is fishing better in the afternoons.

MIDDLE ROARING FORK- BASALT DOWNSTREAM TO CARBONDALE 

FLOW: 792 cfs in Basalt 

WATER CONDITIONS: Clarity is vastly improved and we are at the tail-end of runoff already.

OVERALL RATING:  7 out of 10

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT: Caddis adults, BWO adults, midges, Golden stone adults, BWO, PMD and green drake nymphs, golden stonefly nymphs, caddis larva (cased and free-swimming), cranefly larva, sculpins

THE LOW DOWN: Conditions have improved in the last week. Guides are witnessing golden stone adults, giant sedges, caddis, BWOs and midges while on the river now.

PMDs and Sallies are down lower on the river near Glenwood, but keep your eyes peeled for any and all summer bugs as we ease out of runoff. You might notice a little off-color water in the mornings, but clarity is fine after noon.

Check out the public accesses around old town Basalt, behind Crown Mountain Park or near Catherine's Store for some terrific spring fishing.

LOWER  ROARING FORK- CARBONDALE TO GLENWOOD 

FLOW: 1590 cfs in Glenwood Springs

OVERALL RATING: 7 out of 10 Weather and water conditions can make or break your day, so seize the moment if things look good. 

FOOD SOURCES PRESENT:  PMD adults, BWO adults, caddis adults, midge adults, BWO, PMD and green drake nymphs, caddis (cased and free swimming) larva, sculpins, cranefly larva, golden stone adults and nymphs

THE LOW DOWN:  Runoff has been up and down this year, and we have seen prime to not-so-prime conditions as of late. Caddis and BWOs are hatching through runoff, and we are now seeing some PMDs showing up between Carbondale and Glennwood Springs. Our guides have seen a few early yellow sallies and green drakes too!

Fish your hopper-dropper rigs around the grassy-banked areas, stoneflies in the rough water, and smaller bugs in the soft stuff. PMD Rusty Spinners are starting to turn fish early and late in the day, and don't be afraid to nymph them in the morning hours either.

We are essentially done with runoff and all rivers are dropping quickly.  This year will offer prime conditions well before most visitors come to the Roaring Fork Valley, so fish hard like a local!
